Make the easiest tree skirt ever!

Welcome to our first blog post.  Please feel free to offer your suggestions for topics you want to learn about.

To be honest, I have never blogged and was having a hard time coming up with our first post.  Should I talk about drapery panel and roman shade sewing classes?  Should I talk about the truckload of fabric we just received?

Nah, I want to talk about Christmas trees, namely my own.  I live in a small apartment in the city so I have a pre-lit artificial tree, which sits atop my wine cart.  I use an assortment of ornaments from childhood along with meaningful pieces I've picked up over the years.  They may not look the best together but each one triggers a happy memory of Decembers past.

Tree, lights and ornaments are accounted for but where's the skirt?!  I never know what to do for a skirt.  It's a small tree in a small space so a manufactured store-bought skirt just won't cut it.  Then I remembered the piece of Houndstooth fabric I had left over from a quick upholstery project I did over the summer.  I pulled it out of the closet as-is and wrapped it around the base of the tree.  Easy as pie!

Here's the no-sew instructions for a full-size tree:

  1. Choose 4-5 yards of any fabric (I used about 1 1/2 yards for my small tree) that complements your tree ornaments and the rest of your decorations.
  2. Simply wrap the fabric around the base of your tree and tuck in the raw edges and ends.  Or, leave some of the raw edges exposed for a more rustic look.

That's it!  You'll be able to wash and iron the fabric if it gets dirty, fold it for easy storage and change the look as easily as changing the fabric.  Oh by the way, we still have some of that Houndstooth fabric on the bolt in the store.
